So some asshole on tumblr has decided that Batman And Robin #23 (ft. the return of Jason Todd) is an objectively bad story because, horror, girls might like it. Judd Winick knows that his audience has a lot of women & queer folks and he actively encourages those people to keep reading his books, and this is proof that his writing is terrible and lacks substance. Never mind the fact that approximately every other writer working in comics consistently panders to-- and only to-- cis white dude fans over the age of 35. Nothing about the consistent return to boring-as-fuck cis white dude characters from the 1960s is inherently "bad storytelling", no. Only when we get our icky fangirl cooties all over things does fanservicey pandering* become a negative thing. (Because obviously alienating new readers and catering only to people who have been buying comics for decades anyway is How Marketing Works, that's why the superhero comics industry is going so well! Oh wait no, the opposite of that.)

Hi. I am fucking pissed off about this, if you couldn't tell from the overuse of italics. This icon is an accurate representation of my face right now.

* And, okay, I am not denying that there is fanservicey pandering going on. The comic in question had a gratuitous shower scene. But you know what? So did Oracle: The Cure.

OKAY OKAY OKAY.

If you are or ever were a Stephanie Brown fan, and you got pissed off by the bullshit way she was treated by both by Batman in-story and by DC as a company...

You NEED "Batgirl: Bruce Wayne: The Road Home" in your life RIGHT NOW.

I just. It is so fucking perfect, I was shaking and crying.*

Seriously. If you are not in a position to go buy any comics right now, shoot me a message and I'll scan it tomorrow. I'm anti-sharing-full-comics-online in general (working at a comic shop will do that to you) but for this gloriousness I'm making an exception. (Besides, y'all are my friends, and I lend comics to my non-internet friends all the time.)

* To be fair, I'm having a weird brain-day and I've been moved to tears by at at least four different things today.

For [livejournal.com profile] heroines_fest, prompt: "Lian Harper, AU where her mother raised her."
PG-13 for implied violence, I guess? There is an awful lot of blood.

Growing up, it was just me and my mom against the world... )

So I've started doing shifts at the daycare my mom works at, for the summer. Which is great! Because as much as I love (and also hate, often at the same time) working at a comic shop, retail pays shit. And children are great! People think because I am a sarcastic misanthrope that I must therefore hate children, but that is so not true. I love kids. I hate parents.

Oh, Wonder Woman? They don't know who that is. )

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] colonize had the BEST ADVENTURE. My mom works at a daycare, so she has a membership at a local toystore, where we've been saving up points for basically the last twenty years. We cashed those points in for $75 in store credit, which for some reason you had to spend all in one go. .....So I now have $75 worth of Playmobil that I hadn't had before! Including Evil Mermaid Queen (who is for some reason making the 4chan logo face) and her Purple Barbarian Soldiers (seriously they were exactly the same colour as the Queen, it was sort of perfect). They were engaged in a bitter feud with King Culturally-Confused his champion, Sir Glowing Chainsaw-Gun-Lance, and their allies, Barbarians who carry enough weapons for their wolves to be armed too.

...I FUCKING LOVE PLAYMOBIL, THE END. (There is a point to buying these, I promise, there are Things that will come of it at some point. Possiblymaybe.)

ALSO! Yesterday NEW BIRDS OF PREY CAME OUT, have I mentioned that they are my FAVOURITE? I just. HOW SO AWESOME? Here, I'll just link to the last time I gushed about BoP. I'm tempted to do a page-by-page review at some point, inspired by [personal profile] nevermore999's Super Mega Batgirl Reviews.

But I can't do that now, or this weekend. Because! This weekend! My mom and [livejournal.com profile] lufwood_emilius and I are going to the STEAMPUNK WORLD FAIR. WE LEAVE TOMORROW MORNING. THIS IS GONNA BE SO AWESOME :D. Expect pictures!

Nothing says "More Joy" like "Birds of Prey Relaunch," but that was yesterday. So I think it is time to talk about why BoP is the greatest! And by "talk about" I mean "post a gazillion pictures of." Not even remotely dial-up friendly.)

It's Black Canary putting her boot in bad guys' faces and the Huntress taking no *&^% from anyone and Oracle being smarter than anyone else in Gotham. )

So, Geek Girls Network has put out a list of their top ten female comics characters. It is interesting and well-rounded! There are a lot of characters that do not usually make these kind of lists! There are only two mainstream DC and Marvel superheroes!

...But, this is a list that includes Gail, Frank Miller's killer hooker, and does not include Oracle. So, here is my top ten list: Not necessarily the characters I like best, but the ones I think are the best as characters, if that makes any sense. It is, um, really heavily DC/Vertigo biased, because that's what I read most of.

10. Johanna Constantine (Sandman/Hellblazer): Because she's the laughing magician, and does a hell of a better job of it than John. And she has apparently met the Doctor.

9. Grace Choi (Outsiders): She's an eight-foot tall half-Amazon who used to be the bouncer at a club for metahumans. Would you wanna cross her?

8. Vanya Hargreaves (Umbrella Academy): Anything I have to say about her would totally spoil Apocalypse Suite for anyone who hasn't read it. I fucking love Vanya, though.

7. Scandal Savage (Secret Six): Anyone who could lead the Six for more than a week deserves a medal.

6. Renee Montoya (Gotham Central): Well, okay, she's been in books before and after Gotham Central, but that series made me love her. She's a good cop, she's just not so good at having a normal life.

5. Amanda Waller (Suicide Squad/Checkmate): She's the Wall. Even Batman is afraid of her.

4. Princess Diana (Wonder Woman): C'mon, she's Wonder Woman. Sure, there've been some really awful takes on the character, but the fact remains she's the iconic female superhero.

3. Gert Yorkes (Runaways): One of the most realistically written awkward geeky teenagers in any medium. And she has a pet dinosaur.

2. Yelena Rossini (Transmetropolitan): She's angry and self-destructive and makes poor decisions, but who doesn't?

1. Barbara Gordon (Birds of Prey): COME ON YOU ARE ALL SHOCKED. Without her, the entire DC superhero community would be lost. If I can be one tenth as brilliant and badass as Oracle, I will consider my life a success.

...I like how many of my top ten are like, horribly self-destructive geniuses with no social skills. Um.
