Bold if you've read, italicize ones you fully intend to read, underline if it's a book/series you've read part but not all of, strikethrough if you never plan to read, * for the ones you recommend.

This is apparently a list of the Best Ever SF/F Books. As it has no DWJ on it, I'm inclined to disagree. )

Rules:

Pick ten books (prose novels work best; so pick no more than one play and one comic), and post your favourite line from each. (To make things more difficult, blank out any character names.)

Then it's everyone else's job to try and guess the title, the author, and the character speaking.

This is a pretty predictable list but whatever. )

Not even willingly, it just sort of happened. Finished Conrad's Fate yesterday and Time of the Ghost just now. Eight Days of Luke tomorrow, I'm thinking.

You would think after ten years of reading and rereading Time of the Ghost would have dulled it for me by now, but no. That last page? Shivers. Every time.

I'm happy to see her remembered as a Grand Master of fantasy-- because there's no doubt that she absolutely was-- but goddamn, could she ever write good horror when she wanted to.

This is a recommendation, for people who have not read it: Time of the Ghost is a YA horror novel about loss of identity and the terrible things children do to cope with neglect, which looks like a book about evil dolls and hauntings and demon/goddess-worship. The narrator is the ghost of one of the four Melford sisters-- but she's not sure which, or why she is a ghost. Only that something is wrong.

It is a lot more disturbing then I realised as a kid, and I'm not just talking about the supernatural parts.

I have not forgotten to do this! It's just that the beginning of May is stupid-busy, what with Free Comic Book Day and all.

A Wizard of Mars, Diane Duane )Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy and the History of Comic Book Heroines, Mike Madrid )Callahan's Lady, Spider Robinson )
Not on the list due to Paypal problems that can't be resolved until my mom gets back from B.C.: The Wolf House: Fair Game, Mary Borsellino.

And now, for something completely different: The meme where people pick icons for you to talk about is going around!

Oh man, I acquired so much neat stuff today, Internets!

- My mom found me a Playmobil figure wearing a red military jacket that looks scarily familiar. I am going to make him a tiny scarf & interesting glasses, it'll be great!

- I found a tank top with a glittery, rhinestoned octopus on. It's like it was made just for me! (A squid would have been better, obviously, but I do love all cephalopods.)

- The H&M lightweight military jacket that I've been in love with but too cheap for finally got put on clearance! (I got it in beige, because I have way too many black jackets/coats as-is)

- I found the JLU action figure three-pack with Green Lantern and Fire & Ice. I have all four human Lanterns! I have Bea & Tora! It was being cleared for eight bucks!

- Aaaaand I bought A Wizard of Mars! I have been waiting five years for this book. I fully recognise that I am abusing the italics tags here but I don't even care. I want to hide myself away in my room for a few hours 'til I finish it, but I promised myself I would do the what-I-read-in-March post first.

So. Books!
Approx. a billionty Korman books )
...So yeah, I've basically come to terms with the fact that this is my fandom now. Obscure, out-of-print Canadian kids' books from the '80s. I have e-books that fell off the back of a truck, if anyone wants them? :D?
Indigara, Tanith Lee )
Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov )
Brave New World, Aldous Huxley )
GREAT. DONE. NEW DIANE DUANE BOOK TIME NOW.

I always want to keep track of all the books I read in a year, but then it never happens. This year I'm gonna fucking do it. Probably-spoilery thoughts on each book behind the cut!

And Another Thing, Eoin Colfer after DNA )
Leviathan, Scott Westerfield )
Frankenstein, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley )
A Wizard Alone and Wizard's Holiday, Diane Duane )

HERE ARE SOME THINGS THAT HAVE MADE ME UNREASONABLY HAPPY LATELY.

- Gail Simone Returns to Birds Of Prey :DDDDD MY GIRLS ARE BAAACK FUCK YES. MY GLEE CANNOT BE TEXTUALLY RENDERED.

- Justice League International Returns, and also Giffen & De Matteis are writing Booster Gold. Apparently 2010 is the Year of DC Proving They Really Do Love Me? Seriously, next we'll hear they've got PAD back and are rebooting Young Justice

- Last night I got to watch NEW Kids In The Hall. Inept cops, dudes playing ladies, hosers, inappropriate jokes that I would find offensive if anybody else did them... Business as usual! God bless the CBC.

- THIS PICTURE. AHHHHH YOU GUYS SHE HAS A RING.

- Rereading Frankenstein for Humanities. SECRET: I kind of love this book a lot! I know, you are all shocked.

- Scott Westerfield's Leviathan. Steampunk WWI! Obnoxious Hapsburg boy (& his mecha) meets plucky Scottish girl-disguised-as-boy (& her flying whale)! NORA FUCKING BARLOW! Seriously, how is this book so awesome? (I am only 3/4 of the way through, no major spoilers please!)

- OPI has made a line of Tim Burton's Alice inspired nail polish! I mean, I probably can't buy any, OPI is crazy expensive and I just got two new colours for Christmas, but the fact that it even exists is pretty awesome.

I have some drawings to scan, but they are kind of crappy on account of being drawn entirely on buses and subways. Also it is around midnight and I am really tired. The kind of tired where you don't really want to sleep, but you can't do anything else of use. Do other people get that, or is it just me?

[livejournal.com profile] colonize tagged me with Bellatrix for that picspam-meme, but I couldn't find all the pictures. I might have to draw some of them myself, is that cheating?

Anyway, the point is, I can't do that meme right now, so I'm gonna do this one instead:

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing.
2. Do this every day for eight days without fail.

* The episode of Merlin S1 with Lancelot in! And subsequent flaily conversations about Arthurian legend with [livejournal.com profile] cws_eat_chs. I've been a diehard Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot shipper since the summer I was eight or so and read twelve different Arthur cycles in two months. Including Mists of Avalon. Yeah.

* The year's first Critical Sexualities class! This basically involved a lot of rude words. You've not lived until you've had a prof make a room full of students say "Cocksucker" in unison. Also, one of my friends who doesn't live in Toronto is in this class, and I hadn't seen him since spring.

* Finally finished Tamora Pierce's Terrier! When I'm depressed I find it really hard to finish books. I've started that one at least twice. And now I'm done! There is nothing like finishing a really good book. Even if I did guess who the murderer was pretty early on.
